Accessibility in Play
Canadian children aged 5 to 14 have a mobility disability rate of 1.2%. Across Canada, 174 810 children between the ages of 5 and 14 have an identified disability, 23 150 of which affect their mobility. As children enter the school system, barriers and challenges are more likely to be encountered and disability is more likely to be identified. As children grow older, they encounter more areas of life where they may experience disadvantage. The majority of parents of older children with disabilities reported their child is at a disadvantage in home life, school life, and at play.
The Pine Ridge Playground Committee is dedicated to creating a play space that can be enjoyed by children of all ages and abilities. We recognize that 1.2% may seem like a small number, but we care equally about the 1.2% as we do about the 98.8%. Our aim is that every Pine Ridge student will feel welcome and included in our play space.
